Having a few essential items available right in the garage is convenient. There’s no need to stress about finding what you need in the moment.

This blog is here to prevent you from being a situation where you can’t find the most crucial winter essentials when you need them.

Organize and store things in the garage properly

When you have things organized on shelves and hung on the walls, it’s an easy way to make sure you can find everything you need. You’ll no longer spend ages searching for things at the moment.

In the warmer months, you might do car work in the garage, exercise in the space, or work on other projects. But once the temperature drops, seasonal things need to be moved elsewhere so that there’s room for the car.

Don’t be afraid to go through the things in the garage and get rid of things you’re not going to use again.

Throwing things in the bin isn’t the only option. You can also recycle and give working items to charity.

Consider the items you need most for the winter ahead

1. Tips for those who own a snowblower

Have you checked recently to make sure it’s working? It’s a good idea to change out the motor oil. If you haven’t had a recent tune-up done, now might also be a good time for that.

2. How are your snow shovels looking?

A great example of stored shovels in the garage.

Make sure all your snow shovels are in excellent condition. If they aren’t, one of them may break when you’re trying to get ice off your front walk or the handle will give out when shoveling wet, heavy snow.

3. Ice melters and abrasives are a must

One of the things that any garage should have is a full bag of rock salt to fight the ice and snow. It’s also a good idea to have an abrasive like sand or gravel on hand. It can help prevent you and your family members from injuries on patches of ice.

4. Have you tested your emergency generator?

Especially if you live somewhere that has frequent power outages, an emergency generator is something you can’t do without.

  • Check to be sure the generator is in good working shape.
  • Make sure there is a full gas can available for the first time there is an outage.
  • Don’t forget! The generator shouldn’t ever run while in the garage itself. The exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which can get into your home and poison those inside. Since hundreds of people in North America die of carbon monoxide poisoning each year, be cautious.

5. Is everything you need for your car easily accessible?

  • Take a look to make sure you have enough windshield washer fluid to get you through the season.
  • You should also be sure you know where your snow brushes and ice scrapers are located
  • It might be time to put these items in your vehicle so that you’re prepared for any bad weather ahead.
  • For those who have a vehicle outside of the garage, you also want to make sure you know where your jumper cables are. If you aren’t sure where they are, now is the time to find out.

6. Make sure everything else is another winter-ready for the season’s fun!
