Does my door have R-16 level thermal insulation?

House In Winter

With advancements in technology, the number of scams increase daily. Unfortunately, this means that we’re less likely to trust information straight off the bat, without doing some research and double checking ourselves first.

If you’re wondering how you can tell if your new garage door does actually have R-16 level thermal insulation, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll teach you how to carry out a simple test to see just how insulated your garage door is.

FYI, our test is based on an adjoining, insulated garage, non-heated garage, with an insulated door (injected with polyurethane foam) that has weather-stripping around the outside edges, between the door sections and at the bottom of the door.

To really tell how well insulated your garage door is, you need to measure on a cold morning when the outside temperature is below zero.

  1. Get into your car and turn the key so that you can see the temperature displayed on the dashboard, but don’t start the engine yet. Note down the temperature.
  2. Start your car and drive around for a while, at least ten minutes, then note the temperature displayed on the dashboard.
