Are There Standard Sizes for Garage Doors?

If you’re in the process of building a new garage, you might be at the point where you’re considering what size door you should install. Going over the different options, you start to see that there are a variety of different styles and sizes but can’t seem to find a “standard” door. If you can’t find a standard door, that is because there is no such thing.

That is correct. Garage doors come in all different forms and cannot be reduced to just one standard size. While it’s true that some sizes are more common than others, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of door. Your garage door size will largely depend on your individual garage space and door frame opening.

Maybe when you started your garage renovation, you thought that a standard door was an all-white single door with 3 windows measuring in at about 8 by 7 feet. While this seems like a pretty standard door, the truth is that your definition of the standard could be quite different than someone else’s.

With so many options to choose from, picking the right door can be a challenge, however, it can also be seen as a positive. Having a lot of different choices allows you to customize your door to your style preferences and allows you to choose a door that not only matches your house’s style, but also your own personality.

Now that we’ve gone over the fact that there’s no one standard-sized door, we’d like to reiterate that there are some sizes that are more common than others.

The most common sizes

Are 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 16 feet by width, and 7 and 8 feet in height. These dimensions are good to know as a starting point for picking out the right door for your space.

What to Consider Before Buying Your New Door

The size door you choose will ultimately depend on whether or not you decide to rebuild your garage or if you’re simply replacing the existing door.

Those looking to buy a new door for an already existing garage will have to pick a door that will fit their current garage door frame. Another important consideration you’re going to need to make is the space available in your garage to install the tracks to lift the door. These tracks are commonly referred to as lifts. These tracks allow the door to open. There are different types of lifts, depending on your needs and the space you have.

If you are building a new garage, it is important to consider how the space will be used. Some things to think about are whether or not you plan on parking two cars or just one. Perhaps you have a motorcycle or an RV you plan on storing in the garage. If this is the case, you will most likely need to install a larger door.

Your Garage Door Size Varies According to Your Garage Use

If you’re only planning on storing a single car, a door that measures between 7 and 10 feet wide should be large enough to serve your needs. A 7-foot door will be a bit cramped but still manageable if you’re willing to sacrifice space. An 8- or 9-foot door will make opening your car doors a much easier process but isn’t entirely necessary if you’re looking to save a little extra money.

Those looking to park a pickup truck or massive SUV will need at least a 9-foot-wide door. But a door that is 10 feet in width would be ideal. Thankfully, we make doors in a wide variety of sizes ranging from 4 feet to 20 feet in width.

Garage door sizes can vary depending on the size of your garage, however, as long as the door is small enough to fit into the front of your garage, it can be installed without a problem. At the end of the day, it will come down to your personal preferences and budget.

Single Door Widths Range Between 7 and 12’while double garage doors vary from 14 to 20’

If you’re looking for a single door but would like to park 2 cars, we advise that you go with a 16-foot door to give you enough space to fit both cars with relative ease. You could also go with a 14-foot door but be prepared for a tight squeeze. Those going with the 14-foot option might need to park their cars at an angle so that they can both fit.

9-foot single doors will not be large enough to fit 2 cars, but if you insist on having a smaller door and need to have 2 cars parked in the garage, it is possible to install two 8-foot-wide single doors.

This can give your garage a very nice look, and still allow you to park both cars. However, you should be aware that installing 2 single doors will require 2 garage door openers, which could be an added expense.

Consider Adding a LiftMaster Door Opener to Your Garage

Heavy doors will need a properly balanced garage door opening system. You can call a garage door specialist who can perform the necessary maintenance on your current system to ensure that it can handle the weight of your door. You can also have them install a new system.

LiftMaster offers many different models. For example, check out the LiftMaster 87504-267 opener. This garage door opener is equipped with Wi-Fi capability and can be controlled and monitored from anywhere in the world. Additionally, LiftMaster door openers offer extra protection against burglars. If the opener detects a forced entry, it will push the door down to prevent it from opening.

The Garage Door Style

Our custom garage doors are cut to the nearest inch to ensure a perfect fit. Weatherstripping can make the fit even more precise as it will seal any small gaps that weren’t accounted for when the garage door was made.

Because all of our doors are custom-made, you won’t have to worry about paying extra for the exact dimensions you need to accommodate your door frame.

Another important thing to note is that each garage door design is different and may not fit every door frame. Even doors with the same pattern might not work for your space, which is why it is important to have a professional perform the installation to ensure that the door style you choose will work for your specific garage.
